WE ARE READY BECAUSE WE ARE PREPARED...
Is Boracay ready to response in an emergency? This is
the usual question I am being questioned by tourists as General Manager of
Boracay Adventures. My answer? Yes, we are! We are prepared to respond in an emergency.
Last December 1, was the monthly Flag Raising Ceremony
organized by Hon. Mayor John Yap and Boracay Action Group led by Comm. Leonard
Tirol PCGA took the opportunity to plan a rescue simulation. The rescue
simulation was planned and carried out by CDR. Peter Tay PCGA with the
assistance of the Philippines Red Cross Boracay, Philippines Coast Guard,
Philippines Coast Guard Auxiliary Sq. 609, Bureau of Fire Protection Boracay
and Boracay Action Group.
5 victims went overboard of the Paraw, 3 victims were drowned
and 2 victims with fracture arm and leg. A passerby shouted for help and
immediately swimmers from the Red Cross Boracay swim towards the victims and
upon receiving emergency signal, Philippines Coast Guard responded with their
rubber boat and Boracay Action Group responded with their Sea Ambulance &
Jet Ski Ambulance. It took them less than 3 minutes to the victims and less
than 2 minutes to the shore.
Upon arrival at the shore, volunteers from the
Philippines Coast Guard Auxiliary led by Philippines Coast Guard responded with
Spine Board to carry the victims to the shore for medical treatment and some
were helping to control the crowd. All Emergency Medical Technician responded
with the necessary rescue treatment providing Primary Care on victims who were
drown and Secondary Care on victims with fracture arm & leg. In less than 10 minutes, all 5 victims were
loaded to the ambulance.
It took less than 15 minutes to respond in the rescue
simulation! Hon. Mayor John Yap applauded the rescue simulation and was happy
to see that there were unity in the simulation and how different NGOs were able
to work together as a team.
I have to say we are ready to response in an
emergency! We are ready because we are prepared!
Peter Tay
General Manager
CDR. Philippines Coast Guard Auxiliary
